Passage solvelinus are large. Their length reaches up to 88 cm and weight up to 15 kgs, color is silvery, back is dark-blue, sides are covered with large light spots.

Spawning period is autumn up to the beginning of winter. Spawning occurs in the shallow, fast rivers and lakes on a stony ground. Similarly to other salmon fish, malma digs its caviar into the ground. At this time the fish is very aggressive, being protecting its territory it attacks everything, especially coloring with red color. Then malmas are dividing into the couples. Male-fishes are fighting among each other, having their mouth open and fins stretched. Female-fish gives a signal for the spawning. By digging a hole, it stops above and lets out a portion of caviar. At the same time male-fish lets out its milts.
