The ordinary pikes inhabits in the Okhotsk sea basin. It can reach more than 1,5 meters length, and 35kg weight. Lives among the thickets of water vegetation.
Its body is lengthened with an arrow-like form. Color is spotty with light strips across and along its body. Pike change its color from grey – greenish to grey – yellowish, depending on the character of coastal vegetation. Its back is dark; belly is white with grey spots. Back, anal and tail fins are grey with black spots, chest and belly are yellow - red.
Prefers rivers with the slow current as well as lakes.
Feeds with fish. Pikes are motionlessly waiting for their prey among the thickets and then suddenly rush on it. The prey is swallowed by the pikes only from its head. If the pike has seized it across the body, it quickly turns it into the right position before swallowing.
Pike lays its caviar near the coast on the depth of 0,5-1 meters after the ice has melt. During the spawning period pikes move to the shallow places and noisy splashing there.
