The fish owl can be seen in the Russian Far East from the northern coast of the Okhotsk sea up to the Primorie. This bird has wide feathered ears. Fingers are naked, with the thorns on the sole surface, legs are feathered almost up to the very fingers. Wings are long, tail slightly rounded. The bird’s size is large: total length is about 70 cm, length of a wing is about 51-56 cm.
The fish owl inhabits in the forest places near the water pools and, as its name shows, feeds mainly on fish. The bird is active in the twilight, as well as during the day.
There are usually 2 eggs in one laying. The fish owls lay their eggs in the nests of another birds, sometimes in the hollows of the tree-trunk, but more often in the ground burrows or in the coastal ledges. Fish owls never build their own nests. | |
