Japanese crane is the largest of cranes. Its height is a little more than 150 cm, weight of the male-bird is about 10-12 kg. It is very beautiful - snow-white, with a velvet-black head and neck and black wing feathers. A wide white strip beginning from eye is going to the nape and further to the neck. The forehead is decorated with bright red "hat", which is non-feathered skin.
The areas of the Japanese crane inhabitation in the Khabarovsk Krai are the separate spots. Usual places of nestling are marshes and marsh meadows on river and at lake valleys. Such places are alternating with leafed-birch thickets. In spring and summer one can rather easily access these marshes, therefore cranes arrange their nests in the boggiest places with high grass.
Japanese crane feeds on mixed food, but the main forage is fish, frogs and water reptiles. Cranes, living in the Khabarovsk Krai are making regular seasonal migrations.
The population of Japanese cranes is small and that is why it is brought into the Red Book.
