Spotty deer (Cervus nippon)

Spotty deer has a slim constitution. Summer fur is spotty in all the animal’s ages. In winter the spots are poorly expressed or absolutely absent.

Nowadays, spotty deer occupy forests in the different stages of restoration after the fires, where grow a lot of low trees and bushes. This animal also inhabits in the cedar - broad-leafed forests, but not so often. During the winter period deer avoid places, where the snow cover is higher than 45 cm. The best winter forage of spotty deer are acorns, which the animal gets from under the snow. It also feeds on dry leafs, vegetation, cereals. At the seacoasts, deer are willingly feeding with seaweed, sometimes fish, crabs and other seafood.

Mate period of spotty deer begins from the end of September up to the beginning of November. There are not any fights between male-deer. Most intensive roar happens in the middle of October and lasts from 4 to 7 days.

The main enemy of a spotty deer is wolf. More often cases of deer perishing happens in March - April, when they are weakened after the winter period. The main reason of its death is exhaustion after snowy winters, especially with ice crusts and frozen rivers.

Hunting the spotty deer is strictly forbidden. The animal is brought into the Red Book and secured worldwide.
